The Fuselage.

1. The fuselage is the central body of the aeroplane. It extends from the nose to the tail of the machine and contains the cockpit, passenger compartment and a cargo space. Generally it is of circular cross section and in modern liners it is of all metal construction.

2. The size and the layout of the fuselage varies with the purpose of the airplane, but the main construction is the same of any of them. The fuselage may be divided into three parts: the front portion, the centre portion and the rear portion of the fuselage. If the aeroplane has only one engine the power plant occupies the front portion of the fuselage.

3. The front cantilever portion or engine bay has to support the weight of the engine and at the same time it is subjected to the twisting of the airscrew. Thus it must bе strong to withstand bending and torsion stresses.

4. The rear portion of the fuselage must be strong enough to withstand the loads produced by the tail unit. They tend to twist and to bend the structure. The rear portion should also withstand the loads imposed bу the tail wheel during landing, which tend to bend it upwards.

5. The center portion of the fuselage takes the loads from the front and rear portions and, in addition, it takes the main landing loads from the undercarriage. The centre plane is attached to the centre portion of the fuselage which carries loads from the wing spars as well.

6. It is the centre portion that contains the pilot and all controls, passenger and cargo compartments if it is a commercial machine. Thus, the strength of the fuselage should be sufficient to withstand all these loads and provide necessary safety.
