ТНE TAIL UNIT

1. In order to move in three dimentions an aeroplane must be inherently stable in each of three planes, and the pilot must also be able to control it in any of three planes at will.

2. This stability and controllability are obtained by suitable stabilizing and controlling surfaces, which consist of a horizontal tail, a portion of which is hinged, a vertical tail, of which a portion is also hinged, and the wing with movable ailerons hinged to the trailing edge.

3. The fixed portions of these surfaces function chiefly in stabilizing the aeroplane, and the movable surfaces serve the purpose of control. The fixed portion of the horizontal tail is known usually as the tail plane, and the movable
portion is the elevator. The fixed part of the vertical tail is called the fin and the hinged portion is the rudder. The tail plane with elevators, and the fin with the rudder constitute the tail unit or empennage. Some aeroplanes have the fin and the rudder at each end of the horizontal stabilizer.

4. In some instances the movable surfaces are themselves fit­ted with small auxiliary surfaces called trimming flaps or tabs for the purpose of refining this control.

5. Construction features of stabilizers are in many respects identical with that of the wings. They are usually all metal construction of the cantilever type having two main members or spars, and ribs to which metal skin is attached.
