The major reason...

The major reason for keeping livestock on an individual American farm is to increase net income. Other reasons are to provide a more even distribution of income throughout the year and help to maintain soil fertility.

For a number of years, American agricultural economists have compared the incomes received on livestock and grain farms.

As special economic studies have shown, the livestock farms, if managed successfully, can provide more income than the grain farms. It has also been recognized, however, that some of the lower incomes are obtained on farms hav­ing large amounts of livestock along with poor management or unfavorable prices. In other words, the livestock farms have the opportunity to earn more money than the grain farms if they are well manager, but they also have the op­portunity to lose more or earn less net income than the gram farms because of higher investment and operating expenses.

Securing a more even distribution of income throughout the year is more likely to be achieved with livestock than with crops. Crops are usually harvested on a farm during only one to three months per year.
