Technology and Problems of U.S. Agriculture

In different countries productivity of agriculture is an important means of increasing standards of living. In the capitalist countries, and first of all in the United States, rising productivity brings with it a lot of problems. Technological changes are forced by competition and are connected with, impoverishment and expropriation. Monopoly capitalists get much of the benefits from the increased efficiency.

Intense competition forces the farmer, if he is able, to adopt new technique, to invest in new machines, to purchase new fertilizers, etc., in order to increase his efficiency and cut costs per unit of output. He has to increase his relative surplus value by increased investments in constant capital and reduced expendi­tures for variable capital. The large-scale capitalist farms have a great advantage over the small farms in the efficiency of use of machinery and labor power. They arc increasing their share of land, of invested capital, of labor employed and of farm production and income. The output of large-scale and medium farms is sufficient to the limited capitalist market, and competition is constantly lower­ing the socially necessary labor time for production of most agricultural com­modities

For the smaller and many of the medium-sized commercial farms the ques­tion is not of the maximum profit, but that of life.
