Exercise 1. Read and translate the text. Find unknown words in your dictionaries.

The history of aviation is a long one-starting in the days of mythology and continuing on into today. As aviation grew from sport to industry, it was initially self-governing and learned primarily through trial and error. As the industry grew, airlines realized that without outside regulation, the industry would become unsafe. Government now controls the designs, manufacturing, and maintenance of the entire industry. Additionally special governmental programs and organizations provide the requirements for the certification of airlines, pilots, mechanics, and other personnel who have direct influence on the safe operation of the aircraft.

In controlling the manufacturing and design aspects of the industry, quality standards have developed to standardize the requirements. Initially, these quality standards came in the form of military standards that were issued by military departments in procuring their equipment. Later, civil manufacturing units took over these same standards as their own. In an effort to standardize quality systems on a global scale, the International Organization for Standardization developed the ISO 9000 series. The international quality standards provide the tool upon which a globally standardized system can be built.
