Постскриптум





 

 

Везде в этой книге я преуменьшал свою роль в исследовании psi. Это было сделано специально, чтобы научные доказательства феномена psi опиралось не на индивидуальный опыт и не на результаты одной лаборатории, а на воспроизводимые опыты десятков ученых во всем мире. Это самое важное, что я хотел бы сказать.

Но в то же время, я, будучи совершенно обычным ученым, с традиционными академическими степенями в традиционных научных дисциплинах, после проведения своих исследований на основе широко распространенных научных методов, могу сказать, что psi представляет собой совершенно экстраординарное явление. Кстати, моя лаборатория - только одна из двух академических лабораторий в Соединенных Штатах, полностью занятых исследованиями psi. Подобных лабораторий во всем мире очень немного. И надо задать вопрос - почему?

Конечно, понятно, что psi угрожает самым фундаментальным научным положениям, поэтому трудно найти фонды, благодаря которым подвергается сомнению мощное статус-кво. Изучение psi, кроме того, чрезвычайно глубоко касается многих людей. Это «касается» приводит к выступлениям разного рода людей по поводу проводимых исследований. Например, в понедельник меня обвиняют в богохульстве фундаменталисты, которые полагают, что изучение psi угрожает их вере в принятую религиозную доктрину. В вторник меня обвиняют в религиозном рвении воинствующие атеисты, которые думают, что изучение psi угрожает их вере в принятую научную мудрость. В среду меня преследуют параноидальные шизофреники, которые надеются, что ФБР положит конец моему влиянию на их мысли.

В четверг я защищаю не поддержанные комиссией исследовательские гранты, потому что уважаемая комиссия не знает, что существуют свидетельства феномена psi. В пятницу получаю огромную груду корреспонденции от студентов, которые просят выслать им копии всех моих работ. В субботу получаю просьбы от ученых, которые хотят сотрудничать со мной, при условии, что никто не будет знать, что они интересуются такими проблемами. В воскресенье я погружаюсь в глубокое раздумье, пытаясь найти способ, как заставить параноидальных шизофреников преследовать вместо меня религиозных фанатиков.

Psi похоже на волшебное дерево, растущее в заколдованном лесу. Слишком критически настроенные скептики не видят лес, потому что они заняты уничтожением деревьев. Доверчивые энтузиасты, напротив, не видят деревьев в густой чаще леса. Те же, кто поглощен ежедневной жизнью, что-то слышали о каких-то странных историях и пытаются найти волшебное дерево у себя на дворе. И между тем, только некоторые, прокладывая тропинку в лесу, могут найти волшебное дерево, увидеть его красоту и не заблудиться в чаще. Почему?

Ответ можно найти в реакции аудитории на доклад по исследованию psi, который я делал в институте Белла, в середине 1980-х годов. Я готовил свои слайды для лекции, а люди постепенно заполняли большую аудиторию. Я не обращал внимание на аудиторию, пока не приготовил слайды; затем повернулся к собравшимся, чтобы увидеть, можно ли начать. Я удивился, когда увидел, что все триста мест были заняты и, кроме того, люди стояли в проходах и в дверях. Это было совершенно необычно для технических семинаров института Белла, на которые всегда приходили не более двух-трех десятков людей. Я подумал, что люди пришли из-за экзотической темы семинара и поэтому начал свой доклад со слов: «Я знаю, о чем вы думаете. Вы думаете, с какой стати на техническом семинаре в институте Белла мы будем слушать доклад о психических феноменах?»

Аудитория не предполагала такого начала доклада и поэтому раздался взрыв смеха. Я дал аудитории успокоиться, но в продолжении пяти минут чувствовал себя клоуном. В конце доклада, когда я спросил, есть ли ко мне какие-нибудь вопросы, в зале сразу же взметнулся лес рук. Через час нас выставили из аудитории, так как должен был начаться другой семинар. Я не удивился энтузиазму аудитории, потому что уже знал из прошлых своих лекций, что ученые вначале удивляются, затем сомневаются, а затем начинают понимать, что все, что они думали или знали о psi, просто неверно.

На этих семинарах, мне задают, как правило, один и тот же вопрос: «Почему вы заинтересовались этой темой?» Народ обычно полагает, что меня подвигнули на эти исследования какие-то необычные события в моей жизни. Но дело обстоит совсем не так. Я воспитывался в артистическом окружении, которое не верило ни во что. Никто в моем семействе никогда не говорил даже что-то неопределенное или неясное на эту тему. Поэтому я отвечаю, что я занимаюсь этой темой только потому, что она одна из наиболее интересных научных тем, которые мне известны. Действительно, psi претендует на такой переворот в науке и на такие прикладные программы, что эта тема исследования может быть мечтой каждого творческого ученого.

Но тогда, по некоторым причинам, посмотрев на море лиц в институте Белла, я ответил по другому. Я сказал, «Это - хороший вопрос, но я буду отвечать на него, задавая другой вопрос. Если посмотреть на переполненную аудиторию, то, очевидно, что не я один интересуюсь этим вопросом. Почему бы в институте Белла не организовать отдел, занимающийся прикладными программами psi, если столько людей пришло на лекцию? Я только решил, что тема psi - наиболее интересная тема исследований и она имеет большой потенциал для удивительных практических приложений.»

Мой первоначальный интерес к psi был, вероятно, вызван мифами, народными сказками и сотнями различных научно-фантастических произведений, которые я прочитал еще ребенком. Однажды я познакомился с книгой, где описывались научные эксперименты в области ESP и хотя это была в целом скептическая книга, я был поражен тем, что в принципе изучать реальность фантастических историй можно научными методами. Позднее, когда я двадцать лет получал свое формальное образование, я удивился тому специфическому факту, что тема psi постоянно везде игнорировалась. Про psi даже нигде не упоминали. После окончания университета в штате Иллинойс, я попытался провести некоторые эксперименты по феномену psi с помощью одного профессора математики. Некоторые из проведенных экспериментов дали результаты, подвергающие сомнению установленные научные законы, но я вскоре узнал, что на этом поприще получить какие-нибудь фонды для продолжения исследований невозможно. Поэтому, по прагматическим причинам, я поступил на работу в институте Белла и стал заниматься рядовыми исследованиями. Это было приятное время, но я никогда не забывал о том, что за всей болтовней об «удивительных психических возможностях» находится гораздо более удивительный и захватывающий мир, чем его представляет госпоствующее научное мировоззрение. Хотя бы в принципе.

В институте Белла я развлекался тем, что читал литературу по парапсихологии. Однажды я решил посмотреть, смогу ли я воспроизвести эффекты взаимодействия мысли и материи, о которых сообщил физик Гельмут Шмидт. Я написал ему и он любезно дал взаймы мне один из его генераторов случайных чисел. Около года я и мои коллеги экспериментировали с устройством Шмидта в институте Белла. После нескольких дюжин опытов с генератором случайных чисел, я убедился, что могу воспроизвести опыты, о которых писали Шмидт и другие. Но стать убежденным сторонником psi - очень непростая задача. Несмотря на мои ощущения, что научные теории описывают мир не полностью, потребовались целые годы для того, чтобы как-то согласовать мои научные знания, полученные в университете, с тем, что я видел в экспериментах. Я не представлял себе, как глубоко во мне сидят положения господствующего научного мировоззрения, пока не столкнулся лицом к лицу с фактами, которых «просто не может быть никогда». Я просто боялся думать о возможном значении феномена psi. Иногда диссонанс между принятыми теориями и результатами экспериментов был настолько силен, что я откладывал эксперименты и занимался менее опрометчивыми вещами, подобно игре на скрипке в музыкальной группе. Я моментально представил себе, что некоторые аспекты науки просто расширятся, включив в себя феномен psi, причем твердо установленные научные принципы могут остаться точно такими же, хотя, возможно, они будут применимы только в отдельных, специальных случаях.

Удивительно, какую невероятную силу приобретают над нами установленные научные положения. Они задают путь нашего мышления. Поэтому я понимаю ученых, не задумавшихся глубоко над проблемой того, что наше научное мировоззрение - приближение к реальному миру. Совершенно ясно, что многие чрезвычайно интересные вещи остаются за пределами нынешней науки, которая далеко еще не закончена.

Поэтому я продолжал проводить эксперименты, а затем начал показывать свои результаты на ежегодных конференциях Парапсихологической Ассоциации. После нескольких лет упорной работы, я нашел место, где я мог весь рабочий день посвятить себя исследованию феномена psi. После десяти лет работы в рядовой науке и технике, и восьми лет близкого сотрудничества с исследователями psi, я узнал, что вопреки тому, что часто пишут об этом царстве, исследование psi представляет собой передовой край современной науки, в ее лучшем воплощении. Исследование psi требует критического мышления, творческого создания технологий, тщательного внимания к деталям, развития новых аналитических методов, как и в любой другой эмпирической науке. Подобно математику, требуется интуитивное понимание эстетики; подобно философу, требуется оценка метафизики, подобно социологу, требуется понимание социального контекста науки. Необходима глубокая оценка установленных научных моделей, смирение и юмор перед лицом фактов, не укладывающихся в прокруство ложе существующей науки.

Я полагаю, что чем больше ученых поверят в доказательства реальности psi, тем больше коропорации будут давать средств на прикладные программы psi. Нет сомнения, что основанные на psi технологии будут лидерами высоких технологий двадцать первого века. Промышленный интерес к psi технологиям уже появился в Азии и Европе. Соединенные Штаты отстают от остального мира в этом отношении.

Будущие поколения будут смотреть на двадцатый век с сарказмом. Наши потомки будут несомненно удивляться нашему высокомерию, которое мы выказали при нашем скудном понимании природы. Триста лет мы покоряли с величайшими трудностями научные рубежи для проверки и установления тех положений, которые люди открыли давным давно.

И только в двадцатом веке, наиболее продвинутые ученые стали понимать радикально новые теории о пространстве, времени, материи и энергии. Некоторые ученые правильно представляли себе, что теория относительности и квантовая механика полностью изменят наше представление о действительности. И на самом деле, вот уже почти сто лет воздействие этих открытий сильно отражается на науке, технологиях и обществе. Новое видение окружающей действительности появляется на рассвете двадцать первого века.
