HIGHER EDUCATION IN RUSSIA
There are two levels of higher education in Russia today. The first level is the basic higher education. The course lasts four years and its programmes include theoretical courses in sciences, humanities and social-economic disciplines, as well as professional training. After the course of full-time study, students write and defend diploma projects and take the State final examination. They receive their first university level degree, the Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. or B.A.).
Some people choose to study for the Specialist Diploma, which takes five years. It is more professionally and practically oriented than a Bachelor’s degree course, and it is also the traditional way to doctoral studies. As with the Bachelor’s degree, in their final year the students defend diploma projects and sit the State final examination.
While the first two are undergraduate courses, a Master’s degree programme belongs to the postgraduate higher education. This two-year course focuses on research activities more than a Specialist’s programme does.
After doing a Master’s degree, students can continue their work to get a doctoral degree: Candidate of Science / Humanities degree (equivalent to Ph.D. – Doctor of Philosophy – in the USA and Western Europe) and Doctor of Science / Humanities degree (equivalent to Professor).
