Of course, they needed________ help when they arrived, and fellow countrymen were often there to give advice and aid. As newcomers, they quickly learned __________words of English so they could buy what they needed. In 1862, President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, which provided that a man could buy 160 acres of land. The government charged _______ money be-cause it wanted this area to be settled quickly. By this time, there were settlements in the Midwest, so settlers could meet, exchange news, and buy goods. When the Scandinavians arrived, there were hostile Indians remaining in this territory.
