TEXT D. A Tourist Destination and Its Types

Task: read the text and speak on different types of a tourist destination.

People travel for a variety of reasons: to escape, explore, understand, and participate. But at the core of the experience lies the destination – the place that hands something to the traveller to keep forever and share with others.

A tourist destination is basically a travel destination that attracts large numbers of travellers, or tourists. Travellers may visit these destinations to see historical sites, natural wonders, or buildings. Some tourist attractions also have activities, such as rides or games, or unusual novelties.

Tourist destinations can be divided into three broad categories. These are:

Coastal areas – where tourists enjoy relaxing on the beaches and other activities connected with the sea.

Countryside areas – where tourists can undertake a range of outdoor activities, including winter sports in mountain areas.

Tourist towns and cities – which may have significant historic or cultural attractions or be important for business travellers.

Coastal areas: A coastal area destination could be an expanse of coastline that is specifically defined as one area (e.g. Costa Blanca or the Venetian Riviera). Tourists visit coastal areas for many reasons: the sea air and bathing in seawater are good for a person’s health; coastal areas are often cooler than places inland, so on hot days people go to the beach to cool off and swim in the sea; there is a wide range of activities which can be undertaken on a beach or in the sea; coastal areas are appealing to many tourists, because of the landscape of cliffs and beaches.

Countryside areas: These are rural areas away from town and cities which attract a large number of tourists, mainly because of the quality of scenery and the range of natural attractions such as lakes, mountains, forests, hills, etc. found within these areas. For example, each year millions of tourists from all over the world visit Niagara Falls, a tourist destination located on the border of the United States and Canada.

Most areas of countryside which are identified as tourist destinations provide a range of activities for their visitors such as mountaineering, caving, sailing on lakes, canoeing or rafting on rivers, etc.

Tourist towns and cities: An acceptable destination to use in this category is a specific town or city which is known as a tourist destination. This includes capital cities (such as Paris, Rome or Tallin) and others such as Venice, Oporto, Nice, Barcelona, or Milan. There are also business and conference destinations which are defined as towns or cities with facilities to cope with business tourists, such as large conference and/or exhibition centers, a range of business tourist facilities (a large number of 4 star and 5 star hotels, good transport links, etc.) and usually close proximity to an international airport.

All tourist destinations have some form of appeal which gives tourists a reason to visit the destination. Most people have a list of destinations which they would like to visit in the future or, perhaps return to if they have visited the place in the past.
