British eating habits. Typical British meals.

The English usually have 4 meals a day: breakfast, lunch, tea (5 o'clock), and dinner. Breakfast can be a full "English breakfast" of corn flakes with milk and sugar, or bacon and eggs, toast and marmalade, tea or coffee. Some people, however, have just a cup of tea or coffee with a toast. This is usually called a "continental breakfast". At midday everything is stopped for lunch. Most offices and small shops are closed for an hour and the city pavements are full of people on their way to cafes, coffee bars, restaurants. Factory and plant workers usually eat in their canteens. The English like what they call "good plain food". Usually they like steak, roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, and fish and chips. Afternoon tea is taken at about 5 o'clock, but it can hardly be called a meal. It is a cup of tea and a cake or biscuits. At the weekends afternoon tea is a special occasion. Friends and visitors are often invited to have a chat over a cup of tea. Dinner is the most substantial meal of the whole day. It is usually eaten at 7 o'clock. The first course may be soup (though the English don't like it very much). The main course will often he fish or meat, perhaps the traditional roast beef of old England, and a lot of vegetables. The, next course will be something sweet and often baked, such as a fruit pie. Last of all there may be cheese, often with biscuits. It is a common knowledge that the English are very fond of tea. They like to have "a nice cup of tea" 6 or 8 times a day, sometimes even more. On a christmas Day a roast turkey is traditionally cooked for dinner. It is usually followed by Christmas pudding.

Belarusian Cuisine

Modern Belarusian cookery is based on old national traditions. Dishes from potatoes are very common in Belarusian cuisine. Potatoes are called ”the second bread” in Belarus. Potatoes are included into many salads, served together with mushrooms and meat; different pies and baked puddings are made from it. The most popular among the Belarusians are traditional draniki, thick pancakes, prepared from shredded potatoes. A lot of place in the diet of the Belarusians belongs to meat and meat products, especially to the pork and salted pork fat. The salted pork fat is used slightly smoked and seasoned with onions and garlic. Dishes prepared from meat are usually served together with potatoes or vegetables such as carrot, cabbage, black radish, peas, etc. Belarusian national cuisine also offers fresh, dried, salted and pickled mushrooms and also various berries such as bilberry, strawberries, raspberries, cranberry and some others. An integral part of any dinner is soup. It can be hot or cold. Belarusians are fond of borscht, a thick and rich beet and cabbage soup made with grains, potato and meat. The Belarusian khaladnik, a cold borscht made of beets, beet leaves and served with sour cream, hard-boiled eggs, and boiled potatoes will be pleasant on a hot summer day. Another popular Belarusian dishes are “zatsirka” and “krupnik” (soup made from cereals). Every possible salads are prepared from cabbage, carrots, beans.

(15-16)My Favourite Shop to buy food.A typical supermarket. At weekends I often shopping with my mum. We Visit the nearest sypermarket and some other stores in the same building. This sypertmarket, which is called "Evroopt", is my favourite shop, because we can find all the necessary things in one place. We buy fresh food, presents, stationery, household appliance and many other items there. We don't even need to go to the bakery or grocery, as everything can be found in this huge shop. At first sight it reminds a large storage of vital items. As you see, sypermarket offers a wide range of products. My mom says that there weren't any supermarkets and hypermarkets in their childhood. They had to go to several places to buy various products. In my opinion, such stores are simply indispensablein each city or town, They have lots of advantages. First of all, you can buy everything you need at one place. Secondly, sypermarkets often offer discounts or sales opportunities. Thirdly, I like the shopping carts in sypermarkets. They are of great help when we buy lots of things. In the same building there is an exchange booth, a chemist's, a dry-cleaner's and a travel agency. Supermarkets have become an ordinary tiling in the life of a modern city. Most people go there to buy food. There is also a wide choice of pet food and household goods like soap, detergents, toothpaste, or toothbrushes there. Supermarkets can save a lot of time as you can do all the shopping in one place. Supermarkets work on the self-service system: you go in, take a basket, walk round the shop, choose what you want and go to the cash-desk where you pay. Those who try to save money usually make a shopping list so as not to buy those goods which they do not really need. Let's go into one of the supermarkets. Let's see what we can choose. There are all kinds of food here: fresh, frozen, canned, cooked, and un-cooked. We can find meat, sausages, fish and sea-food, vegetables and fruits, dairy products, cereals, bread, sweets, spices, strong and soft drinks. Frozen and uncooked food is often heatedor cooked in microwave ovens. They have changed home cooking greatly. It has become more convenient and doesn't take long.

17. The process of buying food at supermarket

Good nutrition starts with a trip to the grocery store. Unfortunately, even those with the best intensions for healthy shopping unknowingly leave the store with a cart loaded with garbage.

Before leaving the house, we need to eat to satisfy hunger and thirst. So, going shopping, we will buy exactly what planned, and to protect themselves from uncontrolled filling baskets.

Decide on a meal before you go to the store. Before you head out, it's usually smart to think through what it is you're going to buy and make up a list.

Making a list helps to keep grocery shopping a lot more manageable, especially if you're shopping for your family.
When you came to the supermarket, you should:

Take the basket of a suitable size. Then you go to the desired departments.

Check the ripeness of produce. Pick up produce and learn to identify fruits and vegetables that are at their peak of ripeness to make the right choices.

If vegetables look slightly spotty or feel very soft at the store, they'll probably turn before tomorrow rolls around. Unless you're going to eat something right away, buy slightly under-ripe produce.

Whether you're looking poultry, beef, or pork, spend some time looking for the best value and the highest quality. Make the freshness your first consideration.

Look at the ingredients in packaged foods. If you're going to buy any pre-prepared or packaged foods, it's a good idea to look at the list of ingredients on the back of the package. It's a good idea to get in the habit of checking out what it is you're actually eating, to learn more about nutrition and the food you buy.

When you have filled your shopping basket the necessary products, you have to go to the checkout and pay off with a cashier.
