The Sheriff of Nottingham hated Robin Hood (шериф Ноттингемский ненавидел Робина Гуда; to hate – ненавидеть).

«How can I catch him (как я могу изловить его)?» he thought (думал он). «I must think (я должен придумать). –Ah! He is the best bowman in the land (он самый лучший лучник во всей стране; land – земля; страна). I'll send out word that there will be shooting on a day in June (я разошлю весть, что в один из июньских дней состоится соревнование по стрельбе из лука; word – слово; вести, известие; shooting – стрельба /из лука или из ружья/), with fair play for the bowmen (по честным правилам для лучников; fair play – игра по правилам; "честная игра", честное поведение). The best bowman will get a gold arrow from me (самый лучший лучник получит от меня золотую стрелу). Robin Hood will come and shoot (Робин Гуд придет и будет стрелять) because I have promised that there will be fair play (потому что я пообещал, что будет честная игра). And then I'll take him (тогда‑то я и схвачу его)!»

The Sheriff of Nottingham hated Robin Hood. «How can I catch him?» he thought. «I must think. –Ah! He is the best bowman in the land. Robin Hood will come and shoot because I have promised that there will be fair play. And then I'll take him!»

He got fighting men from all his friends (он собрал: «получил» служивых людей ото всех своих друзей): two hundred horsemen (двести всадников), three hundred bowmen (триста лучников), and a hundred others (и сотню других /воинов/).

Robin Hood heard about the shooting (Робин Гуд слышал о соревновании по стрельбе).

«Get ready (приготовьтесь),» he said to his men. «We'll go to Nottingham, and four of us will shoot (мы пойдем в Ноттингем, и четверо из нас будут стрелять = участвовать в турнире).»

One hundred and forty strong young men went with Robin (сто сорок сильных молодых людей отправились вместе с Робином). The gold arrow was his, and he took it from the sheriff with many thanks.

«Don't you remember your promise (разве ты забыл: «не помнишь» свое обещание)?» Robin said to the sheriff. «Under my greenwood tree you promised to be my friend (под моим дубом ты пообещал быть моим другом).»

The sheriff held up his hand to his swordsmen, and they ran to take Robin. But then they stopped. More than a hundred bowmen, with arrows ready, stood out from among the people.

«Don't you remember your promise?» Robin said to the sheriff. «Under my greenwood tree you promised to be my friend.»

Some of the sheriff's men began to run away (некоторые из людей шерифа бросились бежать: «начали убегать прочь»), but some of them stayed (но некоторые из них остались). A fight began (началась схватка).

«Never (никогда)!» said Robin. And he took the big man on his back (и он взвалил высокого мужчину себе на спину). All the way from Nottingham to the Lee he carried Little John (весь путь от Ноттингема до Ли он нес Малыша Джона).

Sometimes he had to put him on the ground (иногда ему приходилось опускать: «класть» того на землю) to shoot at the men who came after them (чтобы стрелять в людей, которые гнались за ними; to come after – следовать за кем‑либо; преследовать, гнаться). Then he took him up again and went on (затем он снова поднимал его и продолжал путь).

They came to a strong castle just inside the forest (они подошли к укрепленному замку, стоящему в лесу: «внутри леса»; strong – сильный, обладающий большой физической силой; неприступный, хорошо защищенный /о городах, фортах, крепостях, укреплениях и т. д./). It was Sir Richard's castle (это был замок сэра Ричарда), and the knight welcomed Robin Hood and all his men (и рыцарь радушно принял Робина Гуда и всех его товарищей; to welcome – приветствовать, радушно принимать).

«I'm not afraid of the Sheriff of Nottingham (я не боюсь шерифа Ноттингемского),» he said. «Come in, and we'll shut up the castle and shoot from the walls (входите, и мы запрем замок и будем стрелять со стен; to shut – закрывать, запирать, затворять; to shut up – плотно закрыть).»

Sometimes he had to put him on the ground to shoot at the men who came after them. Then he took him up again and went on.
