Entertaining VIsitors





 

I. Write down some words and expressions from the film.

 

1. Refreshments – small amounts of food and drink that are provided at a meeting, sports event etc; e.g. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

2. A keen golfer – a person who loves playing golf very much.

3. To be bred – to grow up.

4. Provisional – provisional offers, arrangements etc are not yet definite but should become definite in the future; e.g. We accept provisional bookings by phone.

 

II. Translate the new vocabulary into Russian.

 

III. Watch the film for the 1st time.

 

IV. Give a proper Russian interpretation of the following sentences and phrases from the film. Try and avoid over-literal rendering.

VII. The following tasks can be offered as options to choose from.

 

1. Make a dialogue between a visitor and a host of an office. The host is interested in setting up good relationships with this person, so he/she suggests some variants of entertaining programme.

2. Working on Unit 14, we were preparing presentations. So now just finish your presentation the way Kate did it in this film: offer to get down to some banquet or buffet[14] and have an informal talk.

3. Make a thankful speech like the one Mr. Sakai made at the end of the film. Thank everybody for hospitality, excellent presentations, patience etc. The example you have been given in the film was not so bad, despite Mr. Sakai’s accent.
