Terrace Housing

Terraced housing is also known as row housing or townhomes. The origin of this type of dwelling was in the 17th century in Europe. A row of identical looking houses sit side by side forming a long row of housing that share side walls. The end units of this row of housing are called end terrace and are far larger than the units in between the said two end units.

Terrace housing used to be only associated with the working class for this type of housing was cheap, small and has very little privacy. The Great Fire of London brought about the building of terrace housing that had façade reminiscent of columnar fronts. Terrace housing, dependent on its location and design, was either for the working class or the wealthy class. As time went by, terrace housing evolved and became known as townhomes or townhouses which were more associated with wealthy people buying properties in less affluent communities.

One of the major advantages of terrace housing is that it is relatively cheaper than a semi-detached built in the same location. One great disadvantage is that there is no typically no yard or garden that comes with a unit. As two walls are shared, there is less privacy too. However in today's terrace housing, most are enclosed in an area complete with gates and guards to check entries and exits to the compound. This makes a current middle class or high class terrace housing (townhome) very much secured.

2. Home for me is a place where you are waiting for relatives and where you yourself want to come.

I live in a small cosy flat. There is a corridor, kitchen, bedroom, living room and bathroom.

In the corridor there is a big wardrobe with a few shelves for shoes and a rack for coats and jackets.

The living room is a bright room with a big window. In the corner there is a small work area with the computer. In the centre of the room, right opposite the TV set, there is a comfortable sofa.

The living room is adjacent to the kitchen. The kitchen is small but well-equipped. There is a stove, oven, fridge, microwave, electric kettle and cupboards with kitchenware.

The bedroom opens to a balcony. A big wardrobe is located along the wall. Between the window and the wardrobe there is a big double bed. On the opposite wall in front of the bed there is a small wall-mounted TV with satellite channels.

1. D- Hi! Finally you come!
J - Sorry, I missed my bas. So Hopefully furniture has brought.
D – Yes, of course. It remains only to place it right.
J – So we have 2 beds, 2 bedside tables, a sofa and two armchairs. coffee table, Computer-desk, bookcase and TV. The rest will bring tomorrow. In the meantime, we need to place this furniture.
D - I propose to put the beds on both sides of the wall, and to put bedside table near the window.
J – What? No, I don’t think so! I think that One bed is near the window, and the second near the wall. So it will be more space and we will be able to put something at the second wall. What you think about it?
D – Ok? Ok but bed near the window is mine, deal?
J – deal. We can put a bookcase in front of your bed, I think will look good.
D – Yes but I think that put the table with computer wil be more better.
J – Why?
D – Because above of that table we make shelves, and we can put in there for something else.
J – Right, good idea! And bedtables we will put everyone near the bed as it should be.
D – Good. What about tv, sofa, bookcase and 2 armchair. I think all this furniture would look good in our hall.

J – So I think we need to put the TV into the right corner of the room, in front of a sofa and two chairs with a coffee table and a bookcase near the left wall. What do you think?
D - And what if the TV to put in the middle of the room, near a window, and leave everything else as is.
J – No If we do so, the light from the window will stop watching TV.
D – Yes you are right. So I think that all, we can go to the café now.
J – Wonderful idea! Let;sgo!
