Conference centers differ from conventional hotels in number of guestrooms (conventional hotels offer as many as 2000 or more), in the location (conventional hotels are located in a big city centers; conference centers are outside metropolitan areas). Both of the groups provide business service and equipment, technical production assistance, leisure facilities.

As to the alternative lodging properties in some resort areas, parks and campgrounds are strong competitors with traditional lodging operations because they appeal to a boarder range of travelers. For example, many state and national parks offer campgrounds and lodges that compete directly with hotels. These facilities may have an advantage over local hotels since they are located on parkland, are usually competitively priced.

Another example of alternative lodging property is the cruise ship industry. Cruise ships have become major competition for resorts. They offer many amenities similar to those offered at island resorts, while having the unique advantage of moving from island as part of the experience.
