3. Famous child: Henry Ford

Born a first son of four children, Henry spent much of his childhood with a "mechanical curiosity and attitude" and was always "tinkering." Whenever new toys came into the Ford home someone was sure to exclaim: "Don't let Henry see them! He'll take them apart!" At an early age, Henry Ford learned that self-discipline and persistence helped him accomplish things that other children couldn't accomplish.

Henry Ford was born to Irish immigrants in 1863 near Dearborn, Michigan, not far from Detroit. Henry's mother, Mary, died after giving birth to her eighth child in 1876. As a young child Henry saw a steam engine proceeding under its own power. Thus the possibility of an engine being used as a self-propelled vehicle was implanted in Henry's mind.

Years later, with a self-discipline developed in childhood, Henry Ford invested twenty-eight thousand dollars in cash and became an automobile pioneer known throughout the world.

In a 1928 interview Henry said, "I have tried to live my life as my mother would have wished." Even his mother would have agreed that with his hard work and self-discipline, he had "earned the right to play."
