Несмотря на пространность данной главы, мы более чем убеж­дены в том, что за рамками нашего рассмотрения осталось мно­жество интересных и ценных случаев применения социальной психологии на практике — не только в затронутых нами на этих страницах сферах индустриальной психологии, образования и медицины, но и в области права, бизнеса, урегулирования конф­ликтов и международных отношений (см. Fisher, 1982; Oskamp, 1984). Тем не менее мы верим, что с помощью отобранного нами материала нам удалось подчеркнуть практическую полезность более общих теоретических идей и достижений, обсуждавшихся на про­тяжении этой книги. Мы хотели бы закончить ее, напомнив чита­телю о возможностях применения этих идей в повседневной жизни.

Мы полагаем, что центральные принципы социальной психо­логии и примеры их приложения к настоятельным проблемам реаль-

ной жизни могут послужить выработке своего рода интеллектуаль­ного катехизиса, способного направлять наши реакции на собы­тия, свидетелями которых мы являемся лично, а возможно даже, и на сообщения, получаемые нами из вторых рук. Этот катехизис предостерегает нас против построения скороспелых умозаключе­ний о людях и о смысле их поведения. Вместо этого, сталкиваясь со словами и поступками, которые при первом рассмотрении сви­детельствуют о величайшей глупости, продажности или доброде­тели (т.е. с поведением, предполагающим наличие исключитель­ных личностных качеств любого рода), мы должны приказать себе сделать паузу и внимательно рассмотреть ситуацию. Каковы детали непосредственной ситуации, в которой поведение имеет место? Как интерпретирует ситуацию действующий в ней человек? Каков более широкий социальный контекст или социальная система, в которой действовали участники ситуации? Говоря более конкрет­но, какие объективные черты ситуации, субъективные интерпрета­ции или соображения о напряженных системах могли бы позво­лить рассматривать исключительные, на первый взгляд, поступки как менее исключительные и более согласующиеся с тем, что под­сказывает нам опыт наблюдения обычного поведения обычных людей (включая и нас самих)? Мы просто обязаны задаваться по­добными вопросами, видя, как любимый нами человек делает глу­пый, на первый взгляд, выбор в сфере работы или человеческих отношений. Мы обязаны задаваться ими даже тогда, когда презира­емый нами человек действует явно достойным презрения образом.

Социально-психологическая точка зрения требует от нас не только задавать конкретные и зачастую непопулярные вопросы, но и рассматривать предварительные, часто противоречащие друг другу “рабочие гипотезы”. Столкнувшись с информацией о том, что отдельные индивиды или группы людей не реагируют на по­буждения или другие, мощные, на первый взгляд, ситуационные факторы, мы всякий раз обязаны всерьез заподозрить, что имею­щаяся у нас информация о той или иной ситуации ошибочна или неполна либо что нам не удалось адекватно оценить расхождение между нашим собственным видением ситуации и тем, какой она предстает в глазах участвующих в ней людей.

Когда же (что случается слишком часто) люди оказываются не в состоянии изменить старым привычкам перед лицом более чем убедительной необходимости это сделать, мы обязаны всеми си­лами противиться искушению отнести их неспособность измениться на счет свойственной им косности, глупости либо темных, низ-,


менных побуждений. Вместо этого мы обязаны более глубоко заду­маться о динамике сил, служащих поддержанию статус кво. Мы должны рассмотреть неявные функции, выполняемые существую­щими способами поведения, равно как и препятствующие изме­нениям незримые силы. И наоборот, когда внешне незначитель­ные события порождают значительные изменения в поведении, мы не должны чересчур поспешно или бездумно прибегать к ха­рактерологическим объяснениям подобной изменчивости. Вместо этого нам следует вновь обратиться к уже знакомым нам трем ки­там: к ускользающим из поля зрения деталям ситуации, к недо­оцененным различиям в интерпретации или субъективном смыс­ле, и к нарушениям динамического равновесия социальных сил, которые, не будучи вполне нами осознаны, помогали до сих пор поддерживать статус кво.

Описанные нами более конкретные исследовательские резуль­таты и теории могут служить дальнейшим руководством к дей­ствию. Последователи Курта Левина не перестают напоминать нам, что если добиться позитивных изменений индивидуального или коллективного поведения оказывается трудно, то мы должны за­думаться о той роли, которую играют уже существующие группо­вые стандарты и другие сдерживающие силы, а также и о канальных факторах, которые можно было бы использовать для фасилита-ции и облегчения связи между позитивными аттитюдами или цен­ностями, с одной стороны, и позитивными поступками — с дру­гой. Приверженцы теории диссонанса и самовосприятия продол­жают напоминать нам о том, что если нашей целью является “интернализация”, а не “внешнее подчинение”, то, пытаясь осу­ществлять социальный контроль, мы должны быть сдержанны и умны, а иногда даже и непрямолинейны. Они открывают нам гла­за на то, что отдавать ребенка в музыкальную школу лучше после, а не до того, как он сам попросит об этом, а для того, чтобы обеспечить выполнение работы, требуется не более чем “достаточ­ное количество” угроз и побуждений. Они также учат нас не требо­вать от людей изменения стиля своего поведения, побуждая их вместо этого поступать в соответствии с наиболее позитивными аспектами их же собственных убеждений, ценностей и представ­лений о себе. Теоретики социального научения напоминают нам о потенциальной ценности (или об издержках) демонстрации лю­дям, на которых мы хотим повлиять, конкретных социальных мо­делей. И что, возможно, наиболее важно, теоретики атрибуции призывают нас создавать ощущение владения ситуацией у тех, кто

нуждается в нашем содействии, т.е. предлагать им помощь так, чтобы их ощущение собственной эффективности и самооценка не притуплялись, а наоборот, возрастали, придавая им мужества при­нять на себя ответственность за собственную судьбу.

Те принципы, которые были преподаны нам социальной пси­хологией на протяжении последних 60 лет, имеют широчайшие социальные, политические, равно как и личностные следствия. Экономист и политолог Томас Сауэлл (Thomas Sowell, 1987) ут­верждал, что на протяжении столетий друг другу противостояли два противоположных взгляда на природу человека и общество. Он определяет эти взгляды как “ограниченный” и “неограниченный”. “Ограниченный” взгляд предполагает, что человеческая природа и основные направления общественной жизни относительно фик­сированы и с трудом поддаются изменению, что результаты наме­ренного вмешательства с целью достичь подобных изменений не­предсказуемы и обычно включают непредвиденные негативные последствия, сводящие на нет либо перевешивающие эффект по­зитивных результатов. “Неограниченный” взгляд означает, что природа человека в высшей мере пластична и податлива и что мы знаем законы индивидуальной психики и социальных систем до­статочно хорошо для того, чтобы быть в состоянии планировать социальные программы, способные привести к надежному улуч­шению условий человеческого существования. Нам представляет­ся, что социальная психология достаточно ясно определяет свою позицию в данном вопросе, частично разделяя позицию привер­женцев ограниченного, а частично — неограниченного взгляда на социальную реальность.

Приверженцы “ограниченного” взгляда, безусловно, правы в своем утверждении, что результаты целенаправленных социальных воздействий трудно предсказать. Правы они также и в определе­нии причины этого, т.е. в том, что сегодняшнее состояние обще­ственных наук не отвечает (мы пошли бы дальше, заявив, что, возможно, и никогда не будет отвечать) задаче предвидения по­следствий новых социальных проектов. Сейчас социальные психо­логи регулярно сталкиваются с тем, что было чрезвычайно ред­ким явлением в течение всего XX в. — с возможностью системати­чески обнаруживать, что их предсказания о последствиях той или иной социальной ситуации были ошибочны. Занимаясь лаборатор­ными исследованиями, в своих гипотезах мы гораздо чаще бываем безнадежно неправы, чем бесспорно правы, и быть правыми на­половину уже представляется нам неким достижением. Когда же

мы перемещаемся'из лабораторий в условия прикладного иссле­дования, список наших достижений отнюдь не пополняется, а если вообще претерпевает изменения, то в худшую сторону.

Вместе с тем к настоящему времени накоплено достаточно сви­детельств, чтобы присоединиться к “неограниченному” взгляду на вопрос о достижимости благотворных последствий социальных программ. В данной главе мы привели лишь небольшую выборку из множества успешных социальных проектов, предпринятых соци­альными исследователями. И хотя мы не можем быть заранее уве­рены ни в успехе любой отдельно взятой программы, ни даже в том направлении, которое она может принять, к настоящему вре­мени мы знаем, что вмешательство в чью-либо несчастную жизнь или в нарушенные социальные процессы зачастую может увен­чаться счастливым исходом. Давшиеся с трудом выводы социаль­ной психологии — о значении канальных факторов, референтных групп, атрибуции собственной эффективности и ответственнос­ти, а также тонкой динамики взаимно уравновешенных сил, дей­ствующих в когнитивных и социальных системах — составляют репертуар стратегий, которые можно использовать в дополнение к здравому смыслу при планировании подобных проектов. Как крас­норечиво заявлял Доналд Кэмпбелл (Donald Campbell, 1969) в своей работе, весьма уместно озаглавленной “Реформы как экспе­рименты”, до тех пор, пока новые социальные программы будут осуществляться в духе эксперимента, пока будут сохраняться се­рьезные намерения систематически оценивать их эффективность, выполняемая нами роль социальных инженеров будет постоянно необходима. Маятник общественного мнения, несомненно, кач­нулся слишком далеко в сторону противления подобным экспери­ментам. На самом деле в силу того, что сегодня перед нами стоят проблемы последнего десятилетия XX в. и следующего тысячеле­тия, общество испытывает беспрецедентную потребность в соци­альных исследователях. Пройдя должное очищение опытом, не спешащая высказывать самоуверенные предсказания или давать необдуманные обещания, наша наука оснащена теоретическим и методологическим инструментарием, способным сделать жизнь бо­гаче и полнее.
