Sustained simile (metaphor). Coordinate, mixed metaphor

Similie- is a trope which draws an imaginative comparison btw the explicit T and explicit V for grounding one or more points of resemblance TC)tritium comparison= ground for comparison) and comparison is expressed by a special connective.

TC - Ground-explicit or implicit (John works like a horse)

Connectives: like, V+like, as...as, look like etc.

Structurally:

-simple: the V is expressed briefly and directly without any enlargement (I wandered lonely as a cloud)

The stooping figure of myrnother, waist-deep in the grass and caught there like a piece of sheep`s wool, was the last I saw of my country home as I left to discoverthe world.

-sustained: is a similie in which likeness is expressed and then developed into a micro-picture (My heart is like an apple tree whose boughs are bent with thick-set fruit)

Moved from the brink, like some full-breated swan,

Thar, fluting a wild carol ere her death,

Ruffles her pure cold plume, and takes the flood

With swarthy webs.

Metaphors, like similes, may be simple or sustained+ coordinate and mixed.

-simple: V is expressed briefly and directly, without any enlargement

Spring whips green down Cockle Row, and the shells ring out.

-sustained: the central V is supported by several contributory Vs which refer to the central one; Metaphors, like similes, may be simple or sustained. In a simple metaphor there is only one vehicle, while in a sustained metaphor there is a central ve­hicle supported by one or more contributary vehicles which bear reference to the central one

Soapy left his bench and strolled out of the square and across the level sea of asphalt, where Broadway and Fifth Avenue flow together(O`Henry)

-coordinate: several Vs are separately coordinated with the T; Sometimes there are a number of vehicles that are not subordinated to any central image but are separately coordinated with the tenor. In this case we speak of coordinate metaphors.

Macbeth doth murder sleep, the innocent sleep,

Sleep that knits up the revelled sleave of care,

The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath,

Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,

Chief nourisher in life's feast.

-mixed: 2 or more Vs are incongruous or illogical when combined; Mixed metaphor is the use of two or more vehicles which are incongruous or illogical when com­bined.

I bridle in my struggling muse with pain

That longs to launch into a bolder strain.
