Guidelines for the Nutrition Project





 

A typical 20 day programme is as follows, however each volunteer will have their own personal schedule based on the length of time they are on the project and will be able to choose from the options below:

 

  Program Minimum Duration Includes
  Village Health screening & Family Health Mapping + Report Writing & Outcome presentation 5 Days Health screening of 30 families in a village setting. Includes BMI, Waist to Hip ratio, Blood Pressure + Blood Sugar tests and completion of a health attitudes & behavior survey. Data Analysis, preparation of community profile document and outcome presentation to the villagers. Public health empowerment strategies.
  Family Health Empowerment Program – House to House intervention 5 Days Dietary pattern survey + Food Journal entry. Family based nutrition advice, monitoring & evaluation/ impact assessment + report writing.
  Healthy Food Behaviors – Eating Real – the real Food Challenge 21 Days Inspiring villagers to eat natural foods, whole grains and unprocessed foods through health intervention programs based on health screening results. Family health mapping - pre and post challenge.
  Healthy Cooking using local Foods classes 10 days Tweaking local recipes to omit processed and sugar laden foods from the family menu. Hands on approach to introducing healthy dietary practices.
  Super Foods Gardens/ Nursery/Fruit trees 15 days Relaying importance of nutrient dense foods, addressing malnutrition, and micro-nutrient deficiencies. Setting up nurseries and income generation projects for villagers.
  Moving a community – Village Exercise programs 10 Days Physical Activity attitudes & behaviors survey, overcoming physical activity obstacles, home based exercise, exercise video production, exercising using water bottles, exercise manual development, dancercise, etc
  Healthy Cooking recipes Book 25 Days Investigating nutrient content of local foods, photography, development of recipes, innovative cooking menus.
  Food Health Rating – Color Coding vs Star rating - Nutritional Value of local Foods Ongoing Rating food to allow locals to recognize nutritional value of foods easily. Emphasis on complex & simple carbohydrates, macro-nutrient/micro-nutrient content, fats & sugar ratings, etc.   Pilot project in Fiji. Comparing effectiveness of health star rating to color coding food. Engagement with Nutritionists. Workshops & manual development
  Pay for your Food with Exercise Chart Ongoing Calorie content of local foods and workout time comparison. Observation & mapping of food patterns, portion control & balanced meals.
  Health Cooking Videos 10 Days Video Production, nutritional values of commonly consumed foods, healthy meal suggestions, cooking food from scratch.  
  Village Child health Program – Strengthening immune systems + Healthy Lunchbox (Humus, etc)     10 Days Investigating child health in a village setting (weight for age/height for age/ weight for height indicators), identifying macro & micro nutrient deficiencies, addressing child health issues through food intervention programs, healthy school lunch menus, etc
  Child Health Program – Orphanage Centered (Height for Age/Weight for Age/Weight for Height) 10 Days Investigating child health in orphanages (weight for age/height for age/ weight for height indicators), identifying macro & micro nutrient deficiencies, addressing child health issues through food intervention programs, healthy menus, healthy school lunch, etc
  Short health video + Development of Nutrition, health & Wellness Blog + Healthy Fiji Photo Story 10 days Shadowing nutrition volunteers, blogging, story writing, success story captures, photography, shopping behavior interventions, photo stories comparison from around the globe, research and encouraging healthy eating behaviors through photography and short videos
  Physical Activity & Nutrition 10 Days Nutrition advise for sports teams, village rugby teams, nutrition consultations
  Cheap Recipes – Family Meals under $ 5.00 10 Days Local market research, family meal menu preparation, Healthy eating at low cost menus
  Corporate Health Programs 5 days Health screenings in a corporate setting. Lunch & Learn sessions, online responses, family/ individual health plans
  Natural Food remedies + detoxification 5 Days Using local super foods, herbs and juicing for detoxification

 

 

 

 

Requirements for this Project:

Although volunteers do not need any prior experience we do require the following documents:

· Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae/ Resume

· Police Clearance (in English or with certified translation)

· Reference letter

· Medical Disclosure (Translated to English) (must include stamp/signature of doctor)

· English Proficiency Test - for all volunteers whose mother tongue is NOT English. IELT test or similar internationally recognised English certification such as TOEIC, Cambridge ESOL, Berlitz Certificate

All documents will need to be translated to English.
