The British Banking System

The most important British banks are the Big Five of London: Barclays Bank, Lloyed Bank, Midland Bank, National Provincial Bank and Westminster Bank. All these banks are commercial banks, they are engaged in commercial transactions. They receive deposits, grant loans, discount bills of exchange, collect debts, open letters of credit, sell and buy stocks and foreign exchange, etc.

The centre of the money market in Great Britain is, however, the Bank of England (which was nationalized in 1946). It is not a commercial bank. It is a central bank of the country and a bank of issue. It safeguards the ultimate reserve of gold in England and looks after the English national debt and government accounts. As a bank of issue it cares for the issue of bank notes. It is also clearinghouse for all banks of England, the so-called banker's bank. Moreover, it controls credit and rates of interest on the money market.

Besides there are other kinds of banks: Banks of Issue have the privilege of issuing money; Savings Banks provide for the accumulation of savings in small amounts (from individuals); Investment Banks secure fixed capital for business and governmental projects by selling stockes and bonds to investors; Montgage Banks lend money on the security immovalabies; Land Banks finance transactions in real estate; Loan Banks advance money.

PHYSICAL AND НЕАLTH EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN

1. Physical education is normally offered in two guises: lessons which are called PE and games periods. The gym is a faily familiar part of most schools. Even a Victorian barrack of a school may be expected to have wallbars and apparatus in the hall for PE lessons. The emphasis these days is very much on formal drill and very much more on the intelligent use of exercise and apparatus. The principles of gymnastics are becoming better understood to involve the service of strength and intelligence to grace and movement.

2. Individual athletics may appeal to those for whom team games are anathema. There are so many sports involving individual or pairs of players: tennis, badminton, archery, fencing and judo. There seems to be no limit to the ingenuity of some schools. And, sad to say, many schools need it. There are still very many schools with an inadequate gymnasia and playing fields or none at all.

3. In Britain we are slowly beginning to realize that physical education should offer a worthwhile educational experience for the total school population. Unfortunately recent surveys of the secondary school physical education programme suggest that the Physical education curriculum is still largely team games oriented. As many sports require a high degree of physical skill for satisfactory participation, there may be some pupils who leave secondary school with the feeling that fitness and health may only be the by-products of an active sporting existence.
