SETTING UP AND RUNNING A BUSINESS

1. The business of basic industries divisions covers drives and basic automation system for mining, steel plants, rolling mills and cement plants in addition to advanced production control systems for these industries.

2. Offering solutions that satisfy all customer requirements is possible only when the supplier understands the customer's problems down to the last detail. In addition to solid knowledge of the technological process itself, a thorough understanding of the interaction between mechanical and electrical equipment is decisive.

3. This means that engineers must be well-versed not only in classical electrical engineering and in automation technology, but in systems of control engineering as well.

4. Besides, all the engineering staff is the main assert of business. Only with the best staff available company can provide the customer with the right technical and commercial solution. And only with the right solution customer can become and remain successful. But technical expertise is only one aspect of business philosophy.

5. Companies view themselves as partners for industry, and because partnership extends far beyond a mere vendor-customer relationship, doing business with company entails the following aspects: a) Full project responsibility concentrated in one business department; this includes everything from the first contract and project discussions to commissioning and after-sales support throughout the service life of the plant; b) Specialist design of the best technical solution available; c) Fulfilling every point (guarantee, schedule, etc.) of every contract.

These principles are the keys to business success.

METALLURGY

1. It may be said that metallurgy is one of the oldest of arts but one of the youngest of sciences. Many of metals were known in ancient times and many practical uses were made of those metals, but it is only within the last century or two that the knowledge of the properties of the metals has made it possible to apply them in industrial purposes.

2. Metallurgy includes all phases of working with metals as raw materials and it falls into three divisions: chemical or extractive, physical, and mechanical. Chemical metallurgy includes the metallurgical properties involving chemical change and embraces chiefly the methods of production and refining. Physical metallurgy deals with the nature, structure and physical properties of metals and alloys. Mechanical metallurgy includes the processes of working and shaping metals.

3. The chemical elements are divided into metals and non-metals, but there is no sharp dividing line between the two groups. Elements whose properties are on the border between metals and non-metals are called metalloids.

4. A metal is a chemical element that has metallic lustre and which in electrolysis carries a positive charge and is liberated at the cathode. Most nonmetallic elements do not possess metallic lustre; in electrolysis the non-metals carry negative charges and are liberated at the anode. Metals are also characterized by high conductivity, and most metals possess higher density, strength, malliability, and ductility than most non-metals.

5. An alloy is a metallic substance, but it is not a single chemical element. It is formed by the union or mixture of two or more metals, or it may consist of one or more metals and non-metals. For example, iron and carbon basically form the alloy called steel, and copper and zinc form brass. Out of the ninety two natural chemical elements about 70 are metals, and of these about 39 are used commercially.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

1. Science is important to most people living in the modern world for a number of reasons. In particular, science is important to world peace and understanding, to the understanding of technology, and to our understanding of the world.

2. Science is important to world peace in many ways. On one hand, scientists have helped to develop many of the modern tools of war. On the other hand, they have also helped to keep the peace through research which has improved life for people. Scientists are learning to predict earthquakes, are continuing to study many other natural events such as storms. Scientists are also studying various aspects of the human race. The study of the natural world may help improve life for many people all over the world.

4. A basic knowledge of science is essential for everyone as it helps people find their way in the changing world.

5. Today science and technology are closely related. Many modern technologies such as nuclear power and space flights depend on science and the application of scientific knowledge and principles. Each advance in pure science creates new opportunities for the development of new ways of making things to be used in daily life. In turn technology provides science with new and more accurate instruments for its investigation and research.

BASIC FORMS OF BUSINESS ORGANIZATION

1. All businesses are known to take one of three basic forms: the sole proprietorship, the partnership, and the corporation. A sole proprietorship is a business that is owned and often run by one person, who receives all the profits and bears all the liabilities of the business.

2. A partnership is a voluntary legal association of two or more people for the purpose of running a business. A corporation is a firm that exists as an independent legal entity, with ownership divided into shares. The owners of the shares are known as stockholders or shareholders.

3. A key feature of the corporation is the limited liability. It means that the liability of the stockholders for debts of the firm is limited to the amount of money they paid to buy shares. Since no one form of business organization is perfect, so-called hybrids have been created like: franchises, limited partnerships, cooperatives, and joint ventures (j.v.).

4. A lot of joint ventures have been set up in different branches of industry and in the service sector since Russia started carrying out major economic reforms. Joint venture plays important role in attracting foreign technologies, management experience and additional material and financial resources.

5. There are certain legal requirements for Russian and foreign participants wishing to set up a joint venture. A joint venture must be a legal entity to have the right to conclude contracts in its name.

There are several stages in the process of a joint venture creation on the Russian territory. They are negotiations on the possibilities of establishing a J.V., the signing of a protocol of intentions, the drafting of a feasibility study, the preparation of the foundation documents and at last the registration of the J.V.
