Robin Hood in London

«Do you have any green cloth to sell me (у тебя есть зеленое сукно, чтобы продать /его/ мне)?» asked the king.

He and all his knights were soon dressed in Lincoln green (вскоре он и его рыцари были одеты в ярко‑зеленые костюмы). Then the king and his knights, with Robin Hood and his merry men, went to Nottingham (после этого король и его рыцари с Робином Гудом и его славными товарищами отправились Ноттингем).

The people of Nottingham saw a great number of men in green (жители Ноттингема увидели большое количество людей в зеленом; people – народ, нация; люди, население, жители).

The people were glad when they saw the king (люди обрадовались, когда они увидели, что это был их король: «увидели короля»). They brought food and drink (они принесли еду и питье). Then they all – king, knights, townspeople and outlaws (после чего все они: король, рыцари, жители города и разбойники; town – город, городок) – ate and drank and sang happily (ели, пили и весело: «счастливо» пели /песни/; happy – счастливый, довольный; радостный, веселый; happily – успешно, удачно, счастливо; весело).

«Our king is dead,» they thought, «and Robin Hood has come to town. He has had enemies here, and he has come to punish us.» They began to run away.

It was not a happy year for him (для него это был не очень счастливый год). The king was kind (король был добр), and the lords and knights listened to him and liked him (феодалы и рыцари слушали его и любили его). But London town was not the greenwood that Robin loved (но город Лондон не был тем зеленым лесом, который Робин так любил).

Before the king went to London, he sent for Sir Richard of the Lee.

«You have your castle and your lands again,» the king said. «Stay here and help my people.»

Robin Hood stayed in London for a year. It was not a happy year for him. The king was kind, and the lords and knights listened to him and liked him. But London town was not the greenwood that Robin loved.

At the end of the year, only two of his men were still with Robin Hood in London: Little John and Will Scarlet. The others had come, one by one, to Robin and said: «I love you Robin, but the town is not for me. I want to go back to the greenwood and the open air and the trees.»

And Robin Hood had said to each of them, «I know. Go back and be happy. Help the poor, and the old, and all women. Goodbye.»

At last Robin Hood himself went to the king (наконец, и сам Робин Гуд пошел к королю).

«My Lord the king (мой повелитель король),» he said, «I must go to the church in Barnesdale (я должен пойти в церковь в Барнсдейле). At last Robin Hood himself went to the king.

«My Lord the king,» he said, «I must go to the church in Barnesdale. I go there every year to ask pardon for the wrong I have done.»

«It's right to do that,» said the king. «Go to Barnesdale, but come back to see me when you can.»

When Robin got to the greenwood on a fine sunny morning (когда Робин оказался в зеленом лесу одним прекрасным солнечным утром; to get to a place – попадать, прибывать куда‑либо), he heard the merry singing of the birds (он услышал веселое пение птиц).

«It's a long time since I was here (много времени прошло с тех пор, когда я был здесь; long – длинный; долгий, длительный),» he thought. «I must shoot a deer to remember old times (я должен подстрелить оленя, чтобы вспомнить старые времена; to remember – помнить, хранить в памяти; вспоминать, припоминать).»

He shot a very big deer, and then he sounded his horn (он подстрелил очень крупного оленя, после чего он протрубил в свой рожок). All the outlaws in the forest knew that sound (все разбойники в этом лесу знали этот звук), and soon a hundred fine young men came through the trees (и вскоре сотня прекрасных молодцов вышла из‑за деревьев). They went down on their knees to Robin (они все опустились на колени перед Робином).

«Welcome (добро пожаловать)!» they cried. «Welcome to our dear Robin Hood under the greenwood tree (добро пожаловать, наш дорогой Робин Гуд, под зеленый дуб)!»

When Robin got to the greenwood on a fine sunny morning, he heard the merry singing of the birds.

He shot a very big deer, and then he sounded his horn. All the outlaws in the forest knew that sound, and soon a hundred fine young men came through the trees. They went down on their knees to Robin.

«Welcome!» they cried. «Welcome to our dear Robin Hood under the greenwood tree!»
