Livestock Production in Relation to Physical Factors

All types of livestock enterprises are affected in two ways by the major physical factors, climate and soil. They are affected directly by natural factors involving the growth, development, health and productivity of the different kinds of animals. The more important types of farm animals vary somewhat in their physical requirements and in their adaptability to unfavorable conditions. As a result, livestock types of farming are likely to differ according to the direct effect of physical conditions on the various kinds of animals.

Livestock production and livestock types of farming are also affected indi­rectly according to the effect of the physical factors on the production of feed crops and pasture which are necessary in maintaining the enterprise. A livestock type of farming requiring large amounts of concentrate feeds is likely to be adapted to areas where such feeds can be produced cheaply because of favorable climatic or soil conditions. Such an enterprise has little chance of success in re­gions not adapted to cheap food production.

The direct and indirect effect of physical factors on livestock production and types of farming can be best illustrated by a study of the physical needs of dairy cattle.
